The king looked at Jackson. “You.” He said. “Can you show me how you pawns move on the board?” Jackson looked a little nervous. “Yes.” He said, as he walked two spaces forward on the checkered floor under him. The king looked impressed, “Is that how they always move?” Asked the king. “No your majesty. They only move two on their first move. Then, after that, they move one at at time.” The king clapped. “Bravo. Yes, you’re smart. Now, I will tell you how you will attack the opponent’s pieces.” Everyone looked at each other. Loki gave Jackson a look that said, are we really going to be fighting? The king continued, “Pawns capture diagonally. One space diagonal when another piece is diagonal from them. They only move forward, remember that.” Jackson raised his hand. The king said “yes?” Jackson said, “what happens when we get to the other side of the board? Do we turn around?” The king smiled. “no. You can promote yourself.” Jackson said. “What does that mean? What are we promoting ourselves into?” The king smiled wildly. And, this time he simply said, “you’ll see.” So, Jackson didn’t find any use in arguing, and said nothing. But, he really did want to know what will happen when he reaches the end of the board. He didn’t want anything bad or unexpected to happen. Then, they heard a loud rumbling noise coming from behind them. Jackson turned around to see what had made the sound. He saw, in the distance, a large army. All the soldiers were completely white. In the front, were smaller men, who looked like children. The kings eyes went wide, “oh-no!” He said. “We were not planning for an ambush!” Jackson said, “but I don’t know what to do!” The king said, “TRY!” The other army took positions. The king said “all of you, to the front! I’ll call the rest of the army!” The king blew a big horn, and the rest of the black army came running over, taking their positions. “White always goes first in chess.” Said the king, just as a white pawn, on the opposite side of the board moved two spaces forward. “Now it’s our turn! Loki! Move two spaces forward, get in front of the opposing pawn.” Loki looked worried. But, slowly, he took two steps forward, stopping in front of the other pawn. “Great!” Said the king. “Now it’s whites turn.” The game went by, slowly but steadily. Black couldn’t afford to lose their precious new pawns. And Jackson, was very worried about what orders his king sent out, he wanted to live. “YES!” Shouted the king. “We captured their queen!” The king came in slowly to Jackson and whispered him something. “On our next turn, go up and promote yourself into a queen. Then, we will have the opposite king in checkmate, I already have rook there, trapping the king.” So, After the white knight had moved, Jackson stepped on to the last space on the board. He felt himself growing, he felt power. But just then, the king shouted, “CHECKMATE!!!” And the opposing king threw off his crown. They had beaten white, fair and square.
